Dear SCO Customer,

The enclosed Support Level Supplement (SLS) xnx348a provides a SCSI Badblock 
Utility called scsibadblk(ADM).  This utility is similar in functionality to 
badtrk(ADM), but must only be used to detect or replace badblocks on SCSI 
diskettes.

SLS xnx348a will install the scsibadblk(ADM) utility, and a man page for the 
utility, onto your system.  It also installs modified SCSI drivers that need 
to be linked into the SCO XENIX kernel. 

SLS xnx348a will prompt for the installation of the Link kit as part of the 
installation of the SLS.

SLS xnx348a will only install on SCO XENIX 386 Operating System Release 2.3.4.

SLS xnx348a is custom(ADM) installable and removable and consists of a single
floppy volume. 


                         INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
                         =========================

To install SLS xnx348a, use custom (ADM) and follow the steps listed below:

1.  Log onto your system in System Maintenance mode.  From the root directory,
    enter the command: 

                custom

2.  The main custom menu will appear.  Press 4 to select the option:

                Add a Supported Product 


3.  You will see the message:

                Installing custom data files...

    followed by a prompt to:
                
                Insert distribution volume 1
                and press <Return> or enter q to quit:

    Put the SCO XENIX SCSI Badblock SLS into the floppy drive and
    press <Return>.

4.  A menu of custom options is displayed.  Press 1 to select the option:

                Install one or more packages


5.  You will then be prompted to specify what package(s) you wish
    to install.  Type the following and press <Return>:

                all


6.  The following prompt will appear:

                Insert SCO XENIX SCSI Badblock SLS (xnx348a) volume 1
                and press <Return> or enter q to return to the menu:

    Make sure the SLS diskette is in the drive and press <Return>.

7.  The message:

                Extracting files ...

    will appear in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

8.  The version of the operating system will now be displayed 
    followed by the prompt:

                Press Enter To Continue :

    Press <Return>.
 
9.  If the Link kit in not installed on your system you will 
    be prompted to install it at this point.

10. If the version of the operating system is not compatible with 
    SLS xnx348a, a message to this effect will be displayed and you   
    will be returned to the custom(ADM) main menu.

11. If the version of the operating system is valid, the message: 
        
                Making SLS Directories

    will appear followed by:

                Initializing xnx348a
        
                Linking the XENIX Kernel

        
                Backing up /xenix as /xenix.old
                Installing xenix on hard disk

                You will need to shut down and reboot the system
                in order to load the newly installed /xenix into memory

                Press Enter To Continue :

    Press <Return>.

12. A message will be displayed indicating that SLS xnx348a has been verified
    as being compatible with the version of the SCO XENIX Operating System
    followed by the prompt:

                Press Enter To Continue :
   
    Press <Return>.

13. The message: 

                Checking file permissions ...

    will appear and you will be returned to the main custom(ADM) menu.

14. Select q and press <Return> to exit from the custom(ADM) utility.
 
15. You must now reboot your system before you attempt to use the
    scsibadblk(ADM) utility.


                         REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
                         ====================

Use custom(ADM) to remove SLS xnx348a following the steps listed
below:

1.  Log onto your machine in System Maintenance mode.  From the root
    directory, enter the command:

                custom


2.  The main custom menu will appear.  Select the following option:
                
                SCO XENIX SCSI Badblock SLS (xnx348a)


3.  A menu of custom options is displayed.  Press 2 to select the option:

                Remove one or more packages


4.  You will now be prompted to specify what package(s) you wish
    to remove.  Type the following and press <Return>:

                all


5.  The version of the operating system will be displayed followed by 
    the prompt:

                Press Enter To Continue :

    Press <Return>.
 
6.  If the Link kit in not installed on your system you will 
    be prompted to install it at this point.

7.  If the version of the operating system is valid, the message: 
        
                Removing xnx348a

    will be displayed in the top left hand corner of the screen
    followed by:


                Restoring Original OS Files
        
                Linking the XENIX Kernel

        
                Backing up /xenix as /xenix.old
                Installing xenix on hard disk

                You will need to shut down and reboot the system
                in order to load the newly installed /xenix into memory

                Press Enter To Continue :

    Press <Return>.

8.  A message will be displayed indicating that your system has been 
    updated by the removal of SLS xnx348a, followed by the prompt:

                Press Enter To Continue :

    Press <Return>.
        
9.  You will be returned to the main custom(ADM) menu.  Select q and 
    press <Return> to leave the custom(ADM) utility.

10. You must now reboot your system before you attempt to use the
    scsibadblk(ADM) utility.
